Health and Wellness

Promoting good health is our shared endeavor with God, just as caring for our neighbor's health is an expression of Christian love and service. Parish nursing is a unique, specialized practice of professional nursing which focuses on the promotion of health within the context of the values, beliefs and practices of a faith community, such as a church.  Health is viewed as body, mind, and spiritual well-being; harmony with self, others, the environment and with God.

Functions of the Parish Nurse

  • Integrator of Faith and Health: promotes the understanding of the relationship between faith and health.
  • Health Educator: promotes an atmosphere where individuals of all ages, through a variety of educational activities, learn the relationship between values, attitudes, lifestyle, faith and health.
  • Personal Health Counselor: discusses health issues and problems with individuals, makes home, hospital and nursing home visits as needed.
  • Referral Agent and Liaison: provides referrals to other congregational resources as well as those found in the community.
  • Facilitator of Volunteers: recruits, coordinates and resources volunteers within the congregation to serve in various health ministries.
  • Developer of Support Groups: facilitates the development of support groups for members of the faith community and people from the external community.
  • Health Advocate: works with the client, faith community, and primary health resources to provide what is in the best interest of the client from a whole-person perspective, and advocates for the client at health care appointments.

I have regular office hours Mondays from 8:30 AM - 12:00 noon and Tuesdays from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  I am available for phone calls (651-739-8092) and drop-in visits during these times.  I make home visits, as well as visits to our members who are in long term care facilities or the hospital.  I am available to accompany members to health care appointments for support and advocacy. I also write an article relating to health and wellness for our monthly newsletter.

Live as a Whole Person of God

The Wholeness Wheel is an ELCA tool that guides us in our journey of personal well-being and our care for each other and the world. It illustrates what it means to live as a whole person of God.

As Christians, we believe that God created us body, mind and spirit; in His image and likeness. Because of this, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of our health and help others do the same.

Living healthy lives doesn't just mean that we see the doctor regularly. Health and wellness is truly multi-dimensional; made up of different facets of well-being: Social, Emotional, Physical, Financial, Vocational, Intellectual and Spiritual.

Attending to each of these facets brings us into balance – and closer to the people God wants us to be.
